This 3D scan captures a Punic stela from the Tophet of Salammbo, a sacred precinct in Carthage, Tunisia. The Tophet was a ritual site where Carthaginians dedicated urns and inscribed stone stelae to the deities Tanit and Baal Hammon. Carved from limestone, stelae like this one once displayed symbols such as the sign of Tanit, crescent moons, or inscriptions. Over centuries, many became fragmented or eroded, yet they remain powerful witnesses of Carthage’s religious and cultural life. This scan is part of Tanit XR, a digital cultural preservation project using photogrammetry and immersive technology to document Tunisia’s endangered heritage sites. By creating open-access 3D archives, Tanit XR works to protect and share Carthage’s legacy with the world.
