This freestanding column, preserved on Byrsa Hill in Carthage, once formed part of the monumental Roman architecture that dominated the site. Rising from a carved base, the column shows signs of erosion and chipping, but its form remains intact. Columns like this supported temples, porticoes, and public buildings, embodying the grandeur of Roman urban design. Byrsa Hill, originally the Punic citadel, was rebuilt into a Roman forum after the conquest of Carthage. Architectural fragments such as this column highlight the scale and ambition of Roman construction in the heart of the ancient city.
